Simple ways to get younger kids to read!

  1. Model the joy of reading!

When your children see you reading, they may want to try it themselves!

Modeling your own love of reading is more impactful than making your child sit through a rigid story telling session. Talk about the books you are reading - in the car, or at the dinner table - a few mentions now and then can make a big impact!

2. Keep book characters alive

Children love applying stories to their own lives. It not only makes the text more meaningful, but it also may help your child cope with different situations they encounter in their daily lives.. Remind them what they have learned from characters from their favourite books, ask what those characters would do, and engage them in critical thinking.

3. Respect your child’s preferences

Let your child read widely and wildly. Respect their choice (even if it is nothing like yours). Encourage children to express what they like about their books, and help them find more books like those. Let them choose their books, and read whatever they seem to be interested in even if it is the same book over and over!

4. Kids love to voice opinions (Just like we do!)

After reading a book, ask your child to review the book with a simple thumbs-up, down, or in between. You can even ask more elaborate questions or ask them to give ratings with stars! Probing questions like “Would you change the story at all? What should happen next? How would you end the story if you were the writer?” make them feel like their thoughts and inputs are valid, and encourages them to read more.

5. Travel with a book

The perfect way to keep your child engaged while you are waiting at the airport or at the dentist is with a book! It can keep your child’s imagination soaring at all times, without having to worry about running out of battery! :D

Happy Reading!
